Resveratrol and Breast Cancer

Resveratrol is a substance contained in plants that some believe may help fight breast cancer. The scientific community has been buzzing over resveratrol because of its role in fighting cancers and inhibiting cancer’s formation. The miracle of resveratrol has been associated with many types of processes like increasing metabolism in mammals, lowering blood sugar and reducing plaques in the brain. This helps us fight Alzheimer’s disease and other neurologically debilitating illnesses.

Oddly enough, all these chemicals and processes are associated with getting old. Some people in the scientific community think resveratrol contains many of the properties we need to master to reduce the signs of aging. Now let us consider breast cancer. The debate around breast cancer is a very hot one. This is because chemically resveratrol looks like a plant estrogen. That’s right. It looks like a plant-based estrogen. In mammals estrogens are used to gain weight, and they often elevate blood sugar.

They are also known for causing cancer! Estrogens are commonly used in the cattle and chicken farming industries. Food advocates rail against such substances. Estrogens in food are banned in many countries throughout the world, but not in the United States and Germany. Americans eat more estrogens than just about any other nation of Earth – and we are some of the fattest people of Earth. Chemically resveratrol looks like an estrogen, but it isn’t. In the body it actually seems to act like the opposite of an estrogen.

It appears to reduce blood sugar and increase the metabolic rate in mammals. Some scientists say that any substance like resveratrol can only increase the cancer risk and cause death. Other biochemists say that each individual product of nature has to be tested in the body of the target population and you can’t guess this from the molecular matrix.

From the pharmaceutical industry’s experience with Viagra, I am inclined to agree with the latter supposition. Viagra was a huge surprise in the drug world, and chemically, no one would have guessed this simple organic matrix could produce erections all around the world. You can’t look at a drug and guess what it does. Nature just doesn’t work that way and all data gathered to the present says it inhibits cancer, not promotes it.
